The GrandMasters are coming

In approximately one week , WCM will be announcing the debut of a new page. Titled "Featured Grandmaster" it will showcase one of the all time great chess players that has proven themselves, a daunting opponent to any and all challengers.

How Ever first we need to lay some groundwork before the Champions arrive.

The were various Chess Rating Systems prior to the one that was brought into play in 1970 by the FIDE  (Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation) which is an international organization that connects the various national chess federations around the world and acts as the governing body of international chess competition.

The history behind the current international rating system is a story in itself. You see there was a definite need to be able to rank Chess Players according to their skill,  ability and performance.  As time went by the system evolved, being tweaked here and there into what it is today.

The Chess Rating system has allowed tournament players within the various standards to rise through the ranks and ultimately achieve National, International and World acclaim.  The honors, titles and awards that accompany the much deserved and respective titles have allowed many young and old Chess enthusiasts alike to be able to be honored by their peers and countrymen around the world.

With respect to the many outstanding players across time, I will feature some of the Chess Players of Grandmaster caliber. Players like Paul Morphy, J.R. Capablanca, Frank Marshall, Ruy Lopez,  and Andre Phillidor to just name a few.

In the years preceding the FIDE World Chess Rating system that is now used there was confusion and controversy concerning the ranking of the "World Champions" of any given era.

The Rating system that is in place now has contributed greatly to the increasing popularity of an already popular past time.

In this post I am including a link within Wikipedia that explains the current FIDE rating system and also provides a detailed history of the events that led up to the current system.

Thank you for your time

Sincerely

Terry Ritschard
